Blackout License Plate Cover Guide: Electronic Remote Covers for Camaro & C8

By Jerry October 13, 2026

How an Electronic Blackout License Plate Cover Works

A blackout license plate cover is a thin smoked panel that sits over your plate. Press the key fob and the panel goes dark, so the plate is hidden for photos, car shows, or private-property events. Press it again and the plate shows through. Our Blackout License Plate Electronic Cover is sold as a universal fit for most standard U.S. license plates, so it is not tied to one car. Camaro and C8 Corvette owners mostly need to think about plate mounting, wire routing, and space behind the plate.

Quick answer

  • What it is: a remote-controlled smoked shield for a standard U.S. plate. One fob press takes it from visible to fully smoked in seconds.
  • Price checked 10/13/26: $185.00 (was $225.00). Available on backorder. No ship date is posted on the page, so call or email for a current ETA before you plan around a show.
  • Fits: the listing says it fits most standard U.S. plates. It is filed under our Camaro and C8 Corvette carbon parts, and the install photos show one on a Challenger in our shop.
  • Use: off-road, car shows, and private property only. Check your local laws.

What comes in the box

Blackout license plate electronic cover kit with control module, key fob remote, 12V plug lead and mounting hardware

From the product photos, the kit includes:

  • The smoked cover panel with a black surround
  • A control module with short leads
  • A two-button ON / OFF key fob
  • A 12V accessory-socket plug lead and an extension lead
  • Four black mounting screws with washers and nuts

The listing calls it plug-and-play wiring with a simple mounting system. If you want it hardwired to a fuse or switched circuit instead of the accessory plug, plan on a pro install or a solid DIY wiring job.

Visible vs. blacked out

Blackout license plate cover shown power off (plate visible) and power on (plate hidden)

The product photo marks power off as visible and power on as blacked out. When the panel is not powered, your plate shows through. That is handy to know if you unplug it or the car is off.

The listing calls the build weather-resistant for rain, dust, and extreme temperatures. It is still an electronic part on the back of your car, so route and secure the wire the way you would for any exterior accessory.

Price, stock, and what not to assume

Item Price (10/13/26) Status
Blackout License Plate Electronic Cover $185.00 (reg. $225.00) Available on backorder

A few honest notes from the listing:

  • Backorder means no “ships today.” You can still order. Ask us for the ETA.
  • Frame option: the Additional Information tab lists “Without Frame” and “With Real Carbon Fiber Frame,” but the page has no option selector. You add one item at $185. If you want the carbon frame version, contact us before ordering so we can confirm what ships.
  • No published dimensions or thickness. If your plate sits in a tight pocket, test-fit before you drill or tape anything.

Want a carbon surround on its own? The Vehicle Carbon Fiber License Plate Frame is $42.99 (was $45.00) and in stock. It is listed for standard 6.25″ x 12.25″ U.S./Canada plates. Ask us before stacking it with the blackout cover, since we have not published a combined fit.

Camaro fitment notes (2016–24 6th gen)

On a 6th-gen Camaro, the blackout cover goes wherever your plate already mounts. Rear is the simplest. The plate is right there, and the wire has a short run into the trunk area for power.

For a front plate, you need a holder first. Pick the right one:

  • 2016–24 Camaro Bumper License Plate Holder: $75.89 without shaft / $98.99 with shaft. In stock. Listed for 16–18 LS/LT/SS (with or without RS and 1LE) and 19–24 SS / SS 1LE. Does not fit ZL1. Already own our Premium Tow Hook? Choose the without-shaft option.
  • Camaro ZL1 Front License Plate Holder | ZL1 Addons: $75.89 holder only / $98.99 with shaft. In stock. ZL1 only, using the OEM front receiver. Will not work on LS/LT/RS/SS. The title says 2017–24, but the short description says 2017–18 ZL1, so confirm your year with us.

Both are no-drill, removable holders. Running a fob-controlled cover up front means a longer wire run into the cabin or engine bay, so take your time on routing.

C8 Corvette fitment notes

The C8 rear plate sits in a recessed pocket. Since the blackout cover’s thickness is not published, test-fit it in the pocket with the plate and screws before you commit.

Other cars

Blackout license plate cover installed on a Dodge Challenger rear plate in the Next-Gen Speed shop

The listing says universal for most standard U.S. plates, and our own install photos show it on a Challenger. Mustang, Charger, and Challenger owners can use it the same way. Just match how your plate mounts. We are not listing car-specific kits here because the cover itself is not car-specific.

Install tips before you mount it

  1. Bench test first. Plug it in, pair the fob, and cycle it a few times before it goes on the car.
  2. Check screw length. Plate, cover, and any frame or backing add up. Make sure the screws reach without bottoming out.
  3. Route the wire clean. Stay away from exhaust heat and pinch points, and use grommets where you pass through.
  4. Keep the plate light working. Make sure your plate lamps still light the plate area when the cover is clear.
  5. Do not drill the bumper if a no-drill holder solves the mount.

We do installs at our shop in Canton, MI. Call (313) 262-1886 to book.

Legal note

This product is listed for off-road, car show, and private property use only. Plate laws vary by state and city, so check yours before you install. Keep it clear on public roads.
